It's that time of year

Usually the lights make me feel more Santa and less Scrooge. Maybe it's that there are fewer lights this year, but I just can't force myself to care. I finished my shopping with 3 weeks to go and now all I want to do is make everyone open their gifts early. Christmas is just an arbitrarily chosen day to celebrate a made up holiday anyway, why not open things early? I've gotten a few people to cave, but it hasn't been easy. Still I did try to choose things that were actually useful and individual to the people and didn't pay much attention to the cost. I'm averaging about $35 a person right now. When you're buying for 24 people, that's not small change. Sigh. The truly ironic thing is that this year I actually don't want anything. I guess that's good since I don't think anyone's really getting me anything. Fuck holidays. Fuck consumerism. Fuck the economy.

Yellow Watermelon

Picked this up at the Farmer's Market yesterday. I cut it up and took it to a show. It was a hit. Everyone thought it was pineapple at first. It tastes similar to watermelon but more tart. Someone said that it was more like a regular watermelon rind than the fruit. I agree. I think I would have liked it better if it were seedless. Not bad though. I may get another.

This movie is amazing. Maybe not the best to see when you have a broken heart, or to see with someone who loves you that you don't love, or to see if you don't know what love is.

It's really good. It doesn't have a happy ending, which is how life works. It's cute and funny and a real depiction of the way things are.

It also has a really good soundtrack that I've been listening to on repeat for a few weeks now.

I went on the 90 minute Hollywood Cemetery walking tour this morning. It was $10 well spent. I learned how much it costs to get buried there among other things. The tour guide was awesome and old. He kept referring to JEB Stuart as Jeff Davis. That was funny. There was an old guy on the tour that I think liked my tattoos. He said if I want to see a "real" cemetery, I should go to New Orleans. I got a little bit of a tan. Oops. I even wore sunscreen. Oh well. It was so unbelievably hot.

I saw this recipe the other day and was overwhelmed by the urge to bake.

Recipe
2/3 cup brown rice flour
1 t xanthan gum
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
6 oz (half a bag) of semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 t oil
3/4 sugar
3/4 erythritol
1 T vanilla
1 t vanilla
1/4 water
4 oz. Tofutti cream cheese (half a container. i used non-hydrogenated)

1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.
2. Combine flour, xanthan gum, salt and baking powder then set aside.
3. Combine half the chocolate chips, oil, water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup erythritol and 1 T vanilla. Microwave 45 seconds or until chocolate is mostly melted. Stir well. Add to dry ingredients and mix. If dough seems too dry add a bit more water.
4. Beat the cream cheese with the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup erythritol, and 1 tsp of vanilla. I also microwaved this for about 20 seconds so it would be easier to mix. I don't have a mixer.
5. Pour the brownie mix into a lightly greased muffin pan. Divide evenly (duh). Spoon an equal amount of cream cheese mix onto the top of each brownie bite.
6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick is inserted in the middle and comes out clean.

You know the dreams you have where you're losing all your teeth in a big pool of blood that's dripping into a sink?

yeah?

That's kind of my life today, minus the blood.

Way, way back in 2002 I lived in Boston MA and I rode my bike everywhere, including to work every day. One lovely November day after dropping some books at the library, I did a face plant and lost a portion of my left front tooth. That looked like this:

I had to get 6 stitches in my lip. I also had to go to the dentist and have him fill the big gap in my tooth. He did a really shoddy job and it's bothered me for years. You could always see the line where the tooth started being fake. It wasn't an exact color match and it was rough. I've lived with it because hey, I don't really care and I hate spending money unnecessarily.

For the past few days I have been on a baking/cooking spree. I made three kinds of cookies, focaccia, vegetable fritters and caramel apples.

I tried to make caramel once before but as I didn't have a candy thermometer, it didn't get hot enough and never solidified. That maybe would have been better than what happened today. Instead of stopping at the "soft ball" stage, I thought "I'll just cook it a little bit longer." Too bad I really don't know much about candy. Now the apples look gorgeous but they're hard as rocks. I made 4.

You can't really tell they're covered in caramel, but they are. Of course there was a little extra caramel so I ate some. It's tasty if tooth-sticking.

After a few bites and some time spent picking it from my teeth. I suddenly realized my front tooth felt strange. I went to check it out in the mirror and sure enough:

Awesome, no?

At least now I have a reason to go and get that cavity filled which I've been avoiding.
